Keyserlei Trees Still in Danger… Keyserlei Bomen nog steeds in gevaar…
Not so long ago I posted about the beautiful trees lining the Keyserlei in Antwerp, about the sword literally hanging above them due to renovation works. They are still bound to be cut down…
Contestants started a vigil on and around the trees last monday and an official protest has been submitted to the court to stop the cutting down before that. Though the first decision of the court was that no action should be taken by the contractor till the 11th of november and then till the 15th, the contractor already took steps to start the demolition on thursday in disregard of this decision. Thanks to actions of the activists the digging and cutting down could be stopped. It ended with the police having to intervene and to establish proof of the violation of a court decision.
Yesterday, in the late afternoon I had another look. The action had moved to the first tree that had been attacked last week. All kinds of covers, sleeping bags spoke of cold nights spent in the street with no comfort whatsoever. A petition was going around to be presented to the court today. Encouraging to see that people did stop to sign it, to chat for a moment. Young people, old people, kids, foreigners, migrants… But also saddening how so many more just passed by without even a look, not at the activists trying to draw their attention, not at the trees…

Nog niet zo lang geleden had ik een berichtje gepost over de mooie bomen van de Keyserlei, over het zwaard dat letterlijk boven hun hoofd hangt door de renovatiewerken aan de Keyserlei. Ze lopen nog steeds gevaar, gekapt te worden…
Vorige maandag is een groep actievoerders een wake begonnen op en rond de bomen en nog daarvoor werd een officiële klacht aan het gerecht overhandigd om de boomkap te stoppen. Hoewel het gerecht eerst besloot dat niets mocht gebeuren voor 11 november en daarna voor 15 november, ondernam de aannemer vorige donderdag toch een poging om aan de boomkap te beginnen. Dit werd door de actievoerders verijdeld, de politie moest erbij komen en er werden PVs opgemaakt als bewijsmateriaal.
Gisteren, in de late namiddag ging terug even langs. De Actie was verhuis naar de eerste boom die vorige week de eerste aanval te verduren had gekregen. Een hoopje dekens, slaapzakken vertelden een verhaal van koude nachten op straat zonder enige comfort. Een petitie ging rond om vandaag aan het gerecht voor te leggen. Het was bemoedigend te zien dat mensen inderdaad stopten om te tekenen, voor een gesprekje. Jonge mensen, ouderen, kinderen, buitenlanders, migranten… Maar ook wel droevig hoeveel meer voorbij snelden zonder de activisten of de bomen een blik te gunnen…
Vandaag beslist het gerecht…

A while back I was rather shocked to see this window display in a shop. The tiger looked very real to me. And I am still not sure if it was a dead tiger or a stuffed animal for kids to play with. If it was the real thing (and I am inclined to think so looking at the paws that still seem to have nails, at the slightly damaged ears that the photo does not show very well), I am left wondering what sick mind would put this proud (and dying out) animal on display on a leash to impress customers.
