Istanbul, Büyükada

Prince’s Islands or just The Islands, as they are called by the locals, are at a distance of about an hour by boat from Istanbul, in the Marmara Sea.

Büyükada (which simply means the Big Island) is the biggest of the four. It is also the most touristic one. As on all the islands, only the police and the fire brigade have motorized vehicles. All other transport is done by open coaches as the one you see below or by horse and cart as you will see further down. As the roads go up and down quite steeply, it can sometimes become a (literally) breathtaking experience, comparable to a taxi ride in the city of Istanbul.  Those who have visited the city will know what I mean 🙂

I spent only a very short while on this island and could not really ‘discover’ it – but I hope the pictures below will give an impression of what I did see.

De Prinseneilanden of enkel De Eilanden, zoals ze door de bewoners worden genoemd, zijn op ongeveer een uur afstand per boot van Istanbul, in de Marmara Zee.

Büyükada (wat simpelweg het Grote Eiland betekent) is het grootste van de vier en tevens het meest toeristische. Zoals op al deze eilandjes zijn motorvoertuigen enkel toegelaten voor de politie en voor de brandweer. Voor alle andere transporten doet men beroep op de koetsen of op gewoon op paard en kar. Daar de eilandjes nogal steile wegen hebben, kan een trip per koets wel eens een (letterlijk) adembenemende ervaring worden vergelijkbaar met een taxiritje in de stad van Istanbul. Diegenen die deze stad al eens hebben bezocht, zullen weten wat ik daarmee bedoel 🙂
