Mehter Band in Antwerp

In my very young days, when I was barely in primary school in Istanbul, each national holiday I tried to convince my parents to go and watch the inevitable parade. Not that I was so much interested in the passing tanks and soldiers and other military stuff. Let alone the masses lining the streets… What I wanted to see and hear was the Mehter Band, the Ottoman military band with its history going all the way back to the 7th century. Maybe it was somehow imprinted in my genes, I don’t know… or it may have been my even then present love for music… but it never failed to impress and enchant me. So, when I received a message that they were coming to Antwerp, I couldn’t imagine missing this event. A trip to my own past…

I should have realized that as a concert of Cuban music is a different issue, another feeling in Cuba and loses some of its vibrance when experienced in Europe, this would never be the same thing I remembered from those days in Turkey. And trying to be a photographer and public at the same time probably wasn’t a good idea either. But I still did enjoy it and even came away with a few photos…

In mijn heel jonge jaren, toen ik pas in de lagere school zat in Istanbul, probeerde ik op nationale feestdagen elke keer mijn ouders te overtuigen om naar de parade te gaan zien. Niet voor de tanks, soldaten en andere militaire dingen. En zeker niet voor de massa’s volk in de straten… Wat ik wou zien en horen was de Mehter Band, de Ottomaanse militaire band met een geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de 7e eeuw. Misschien zat het in mijn genen… of misschien was het gewoon mijn liefde voor muziek… ik weet het niet. Maar ik was elke keer terug onder de indruk en gefascineerd. Toen ik onlangs een berichtje kreeg dat ze naar Antwerpen kwamen, moest ik daar natuurlijk bij zijn. Een reis naar mijn eigen verleden…

Ik had het moeten weten dat , zoals een concert van Cubaanse muziek in Cuba zelf een helemaal andere ervaring is dan eentje in Europa, ook dit nooit hetzelfde kon zijn als ik het me van mijn kindertijd in Turkije herinnerde. Zowel fotograaf als publiek te willen zijn was misschien ook niet zo een goed idee. Maar toch was het zeker de moeite en ik heb er zelfs wat foto’s aan overgehouden…
